Season 12 Winner -Announcing Before Official Results: Kree Harrison!

Last week I announced the results of the top 3 before the show. Although I am an Angie fan, and wanted her to go all the way, I knew from very early she could not get past the top 3.

Just as I explained last week, the winner should be obvious. While Candice to me is the better of the two, and certainly had more interesting songs, the winner is still Kree.  The support for country music is just too strong in America. Added to that, Kree has a sad story.

Congratulations Kree.  Another time I will say more about other aspects of season 12.

Season 12, Top 3: Who Will Make It To Finale

All three contestants did very well last night. Candice Glover certainly gave a rousing performance in her final song of the night. Angie Miller had 3 outstanding songs, and Kree Harrison finally was not boring.

But who goes through to next week has little to do with what happened last night. The fans are mostly set already, and those voting for Kree will continue to do so, likewise for Angie and Candice. What will be the most important factor, is where Amber's votes will now go.

Let me say this upfront, Angie deserves to be in the finale. Actually, if it was up to me, the finale would be Candice and Angie. But alas, such important things are left to the American crowd to decide. So here's what is most likely to happen. Amber's votes are now likely to go to Kree and Candice. Why? Well Amber is from Texas, and so is Kree. Candice is black like Amber. So it is logical that many people who voted Amber, will now vote Kree, simply based on the fact that they will support Texas. And another chunk of votes will now be directed to Candice, because the Amber supporters will probably want to support a black person.

So essentially, Candice and Kree benefit the most from Amber's fall out. On top of that, Kree's sad story was highlighted last night, so she gets the sympathy vote, as if she needed that. The truth is folks, that Kree was going to be in the finale no matter what. America has an inexplicable love for country music. The country singer is automatically at an advantage in these reality type shows where the public votes.

There you have it folks. Kree and Candice are your contestants for the final week. Angie, we know you deserve to win, or at least be in the final, but you are in a country that has an irrational love for country music. I really do hope Angie goes through, but based on my analysis, it is not likely.

Season 11: Observations From The 2 Top 7 Performance Shows

This is my first entry for Season 11 of American Idol (2012). But I've been watching it from the start. There's a lot more that could be said of earlier rounds, and perhaps I may get around to commenting on some of them. However, I want to focus my attention here on the top 7 performances.

There were actually two weeks of top 7 performances, as the judges used their save which means no one went home, and hence still top 7 the following week.

Now the original top 7 week actually had Jessica Sanchez coming up with the short end of the votes. No doubt this was quite a shocker to all! Even for those who are not fans of this sweet little girl, it must have come as a surprise to see her in that position, given the fact that the judges have consistently heaped praises upon her. Also in the bottom 3 that week was Joshua Ledet. Another traumatic moment for at least the judges. What was probably appalling to many fans of Jessica and Joshua, was that Hollie Cavanagh was nowhere to be found among the bottom 3. Well even I was surprised, and I hold no ill-will toward Hollie.

The skeptic in me had to wonder if the producers messed with the results. In earlier seasons I argued that they were actually doing so. But since Simon Cowell left, it appeared that one of the changes made was to actually give the genuine results. Yet it seems somewhat suspicious that at least 2 in the bottom 3 were expected to be in the top 2, when each week the results were fairly predictable, with someone in the bottom 3 ending up eliminated the following week. Could the producers have intervened to save the show from becoming too predictable? Could it be that they rigged it to add some drama and help boost/sustain ratings? It certainly seems to.

Nevertheless, there could be other reasons why Joshua and Jessica were among the bottom 3. One strong possibility is that people became complacent in voting for them, thinking that they are clearly safe. This tends to happen at some point during the show each season. Couple that with the fact that the judges really came down against Hollie, so perhaps Hollie fans made a greater effort to keep her in to get even with the judges.

Now the following week, still being the top7, the results were reversed for the most part. Now Colton Dixon (another favourite of the judges) along with Hollie end up being in the bottom 2. Perhaps most people were expecting Hollie to be the one to go. But it was Colton instead!

I must say, that given that week's performances, Hollie deserved to stay. Actually she was damn good! That first Adele song she sang was really amazing. I keep listening to it.

I've never really been a fan of Colton myself. He's an ok singer, and a nice guy I suppose. But I don't like his punk hair style, and he never really stood out to me as a great singer.

It should not go without notice though, how the judges tried extra hard to heap praises on Jessica and Joshua in the 2nd round of the top 7. Not having any more saves, and really wanting Joshua and Jessica to be in the finale, they need to lavish them even more with praises. I like Jessica, so I'm not hating on her. But it is obvious what the judges are trying to do. Joshua I'm not really a fan of. I don't like that type of singing, but I acknowledge he is a very good singer.

American Idol Season 10 - Best Ever!

I have not written anything about season 10 of American Idol until now. However, I have been watching faithfully with interest since the start. I had surmised from last season, and even the one before, that American Idol was in its last days. The show had seemed to have been falling the previous two seasons, and with Simon bowing out, it had appeared to be heading for total disaster. But as it turns out, this has probably been one of the best seasons ever. The producers have cleverly turned things around. Here's how.

Perhaps the best thing the producers did was to bring on Jennifer Lopez! Just her appearance is enough to attract and keep a crowd. But it also turns out she is a great judge. She actually gives useful feedback, while being nice. Paula used to be nice, but oftentimes her feedback was less than useless.

Some surprises have also been introduced. For the first time ever in the history of Idol, in one of the earlier shows, Ryan revealed the bottom three without actually going through all the contestants to recap what they sung along with the judges' feedback.

It now appears that the results are genuine. In the last few seasons, I wrote several entries that suggested the producers were intervening to decide who goes home, rather than rely totally on the votes. Well this season, it seems they are trying everything new, and now allowing the votes to determine the results.

The top 10 this season is probably the best 10 ten ever. In fact, a good number of these folks are better than most of the contestants who made it to the top 10 in all prior seasons. It is somewhat disappointing who the top 2 finalists are, but that's for another entry. The question to consider though, is how come this season produced such great talent that it really has been difficult to eliminate someone each week? Could it be because Simon is no longer around? Could it be that Simon was holding back the show? That seems quite likely for two reasons. Simon was critical of even great talent, and left up to him, some folks who should make it through would not. Also, with Simon around, the show tends to focus on him and his comments. With him out of the way, the focus is more on the contestants.

Oh Steven Tyler is not a bad judge either. But by far, Jennifer Lopez is not only the best judge currently, but I would say the best judge the show has ever had. Well done Jennifer!
